Sleep and migraine
Sleep disruption is both a trigger and a consequence of migraine. Even one night of poor sleep can trigger an attack; conversely, migraine disrupts sleep architecture. Treating sleep disturbance — insomnia, sleep-disordered breathing, irregular sleep hygiene — can reduce migraine frequency. This bidirectional relationship is addressed during evaluation.

Sleep and seizures
Sleep deprivation lowers seizure threshold, making seizures more likely in people with epilepsy. Nocturnal seizures may be mistaken for parasomnias or sleep disorders. Evaluation distinguishes epileptic from non-epileptic events, and sleep hygiene is part of seizure management.
Sleep and memory/cognition
During sleep, the brain consolidates memories and clears metabolic waste. Chronic sleep disruption impairs attention, learning and memory consolidation. Sleep-disordered breathing (snoring, apneas) causes fragmented sleep and daytime cognitive symptoms — treatment can improve both sleep quality and cognition.

Evaluation approach

Practical tips for better sleep
Consistent wake and sleep times, limited screen exposure before bed, cool dark room, caffeine avoidance after midday, and regular physical activity improve sleep quality. For persistent symptoms, specialist evaluation identifies treatable contributors.
